The long term holding system is designed to store live lobster in icy water (2°C) without food for a period of several months in a highly recycled system. The reduced metabolic activity aims at lowering protein and energy withdrawal from their stored reserves to a minimum during this extended period of time.
The main function of the reception holding system is to allow the animals to gradually adapt to approximately 4°C from ambient seawater temperature (12-14°C) before being transferred to the long-term filtration system. It also permits the animals to go through a gradual temperature increase when needed.
The holding capacity and operating temperatures of the filtration modules are based upon the loads and general criteria transmitted by Dr. Uglow through a sketch and several emails from the month of April 2003.
