Mandate: |

Mr. Drew Peck, Director of Facilities, Acadia University, has contacted Aquabiotech inc. for its expertise on the design of aquatic and marine laboratories. The University is constructing a basic aquatics suite and he is looking for assistance in establishing a basic layout and equipment list to start up this facility and to facilitate research activities. The aquatics suite consists of a snake/turtle room, general marine room and an amphibian/fresh water fish room. There is an adjacent mechanical space designed to house water tanks, filters, heaters etc.
Scope of work
Aquabiotech’s Mandate is to assess the needs for three to four researchers, in terms of an aquatic laboratory equipment and services, and translate them into a workable scheme. This process will involve the completion of a survey, with questionnaire(s) for individual researchers and an in-person meeting with faculty, engineering and design consultants, and Facilities Director, Mr. Drew Peck. Various documents may also be reviewed.
Need assesment (based on CCAC guidelines for aquatic laboratories)
- Pre-treatment requirements of available water, if applicable (freshwater and saltwater)
- Recycled water requirements versus flow through
- Volume and type of experimental tanks with type of assocated water filtration/water recirculation systems (if needed)
- Equipment needed in relation to system management and operation
- Disease control management
- Water temperature requirements
- Make-up water requirements for the facility (flow, temperature, fresh and saltwater)
Recommendations
Provide recommendations on equipment and services so that the aquatic facility (AF) can meet the CCAC guidelines for aquatic laboratories. These recommandations should address:
- Functional space diagrams overlaid in the area designated for this lab facility
- Basic equipment list on a room by room basis, with their performance specification. This should include, when applicable, specifications on:
- The number of tanks, their making, volumes
- Water flushing rate (% water recycling) of individual systems
- Biomass (kg) and daily feed the individual systems should support
- Water quality parameters individual systems should meet
- Control & monitoring needed for individual systems
- Performance specifications for the support equipment and services to the Aquatic Suite (oxygen, compressed air, pre-treatment of water, etc.) for current requirements. This excludes structural material and HVAC requirements.
- Submit a final report. The report shall be delivered in two hard copies and in PDF format. This report will include an analyis per researcher and general design concepts of AF as a whole.
